Did you jot down resolutions over New Year’s – and now have that paralyzing hangover, wondering what to do next? Don’t stress – you’ve already tapped into the real power behind any kind of goal-setting activity: you took the time to write things down.Indeed, the act of writing down your goals and dreams is in many ways more important than what is on the list itself. In today’s digital age, we too often mindlessly tap on the computer keyboard rather than slow down and mindfully put pen or pencil in hand and onto paper.
Scientific studies have shown that there is critical value in writing things out by hand – people learn more, create more, and remember more. A simple example of this is the grocery shopping list. Have you found that when you’ve written out what you need, you often can keep that information in your head and don’t even need to consult the list while in the store? That’s the power of putting things down – so you can “absorb” your list and incorporate its goals more organically into your life.
I can give you a very personal example of the importance – and power – of writing things down. At a critical crossroads in my life, a dear friend gave me a “wish book,” a blank journal in which to write out my dreams and goals. I mapped out a variety of career and wellness objectives, including acknowledging and expressing my desire for a marriage partner. I even started doodling what he would look like. Thanks to this writing-by-hand activity, my wishes for my future husband were in my head. Soon thereafter, meeting up with a good friend of mine at a diner, I looked up and realized that he looked very much like my drawing! And yes, reader, I married him.
So even if you didn’t write down resolutions over New Year’s, take some time to record, even draw out, some ideas now. The start of a new year is a great time to think of new goals and how you want your year to look. But don’t limit yourself to January…tap into the power of writing things down at any time. Focused attention to map out your dreams is the jumpstart to putting you on the path to a great new life.
